How to Start Seeds Indoors in Egg Shells for Spring Planting!

Grow plants year round using egg shells indoors!

This is a fun way to start your vegetable or flowers seeds indoors to get a jump on the growing season.

STEP 1

Crack the eggs toward the pointy end to remove 1/3 of the shell.

STEP 2

Rinse the shells and use a large needle or toothpick to poke a small drainage hole.

STEP 3

Carefully dry the shells and write the names of your new plants with a permanent marker right on the shell.

STEP 4

Fill the shell 2/3 full with Miracle-Gro® Seed Starting Potting Mix. This lightweight premium mix is excellent for germinating vegetable, flower and herb seeds.

STEP 5

Follow the planting instructions on the back of your seed packets. Generally, you will want to put 2 to 3 seeds in each shell. Lightly cover with more Seed Starting Potting Mix to the debt recommended on the seed packet.

STEP 6

Gently water well, completely soaking the mix in the shells, being careful not to dislodge the seeds.

STEP 7

Put in a warm area with good air movement, and keep the potting mix moist. When the seeds sprout, move them under a grow light or a bright window.

STEP 8

After your seedlings have gotten their 2nd or 3rd set of leaves, you can transplant them into larger pots, or into the garden when the danger of frost has past. Gently crack the egg, and plant the whole thing!

TIP - If you need to crack a whole dozen at once, lightly mix the eggs and freeze in small cups or ice cube trays for quick scrambled eggs later, OR you can make one family sized omelet!
