Rated 4 out of 5 by from Negative Reviews Seem Wrong As another reviewer stated, I am not understanding all the negative reviews. People are complaining about sticks and wood, when they seem not to understand that a starting mix is NOT the same thing as dirt. Starting mix is lighter and less compacted to allow more breathing room. Also, complaints about mold and unknown growth might be due to pots that were not cleaned and sterilized with a bleach-water spray before potting, or particular bags of the mix might, in fact, have been infested, but I think the company might replace that, if you just reach out to them. I did a previous review, but I'm doing another one to counteract the negativity. And I'm including a picture this time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No Complaints Seedlings Look Good So Far I am one month into seed starting with this mix, and I have tomato seedlings 5 inches or more tall. I planted three seeds per pot, in six four-inch pots, and thinned to the best looking seedling for each pot, for a total of six plants that I will eventually transplant outside. After sprouting and true leaves began developing with minimal light, I placed under grow lights for twelve to fourteen hours a day. I replanted once during this time, in the same pots, to gain greater depth of root growth. I assume that I can leave the plants in this mixture until time to transplant outside. I gave only four stars, because I've never used this or any other seed starting mix before, so I'm allowing for the possibility of failure or for another product to be better. As my title says,"No Complaints". The product seems to work very well for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works if you know what you're doing It's a seed starting mix. You dump it into a large container, and slowly pour boiling water over and mix, until it has absorbed water. Then you fill your trays. All these negative reviews because ignorant people don't know what they are doing. Been using miracle grow seed start on and off for years, availability where at live, and making my own(10+)and yes you do have to sort through and remove large sticks etc, but that is true for all seed starting mixes. 4 stars because ingredient label is hard to find.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good until now I started my vegetable plants (variety of tomatoes & sweet peppers) in Jiffy Peat Pellets and then transferred them to 4" pots, using this mix, after a few weeks. Initially I overwatered them and mold was growing on the outside of the containers. I corrected that problem and they seemed to be doing ok for the last couple weeks...until the last few days. It seems like when the leaves touch the wet soil, they burn and then the plant dies. If I look it up online it says it's over fertilized or that there's too much salt in the mix. I usually garden organically but this year I wanted to try and have bigger plants than usual at this time. Though my plants are beautiful, they are no bigger than usual. I probably wouldn't buy this again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So Far so Good I sowed seeds in the seed starting mix two weeks ago. So far about 50% germinate, different vegetable . Will I need to move to Miracle Potting Mix before I put in garden? Thanks Bob

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't know what is growing out of the soil. I only put seeds in one row but a lot of things are growing that I didn't plant. Hope my super rare seeds do come up. Until then I'll see what this other stuff is

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works ok. Not a sterile mix. I bought two bags a month ago and used one bag to start veggie seeds. The seeds are sprouting just fine but, as this is not a sterile mix, there is some mold and fungus growing in the soil too. I just remove this as I see it. However, when I opened the second bag the soil in the bag (that I just bought a few weeks ago) had a lot of visible white and yellow mold growing on the surface. I'll try to remove this mold before using (and maybe try to sterilize it) but it's really frustrating to see that when I first open the bag!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Rocks in my potting soil?! I have used this seed starting mix for years and usually it is great. This year, as I was transferring my hydroponically started seeds to their own pots I found a number of ROCKS in the mix! It’s a newly opened bag, so I know it wasn’t my 4 year old “helping” this time. I’ve never encountered something like this with the seed starting mix; I’ve come across 2-3” chunks of wood in regular miracle grow potting soil, of course, but I thought this was more finely screened? Idk. Still pretty good stuff. Wish they’d move to something more eco friendly like coir, though.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the best, not the worst cont. I forgot to write in my first review that the last 2 bags I purchased had gnats in them. But again, I simply baked the soil in the oven, or in the microwave (till you reach 180 degrees) and then allow to dry overnight and all is well. I have also mixed this stuff with regular dirt from my garden for better drainage. It worked really well that way too!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from okay I started a lot of my plants from seed this year. I started approx 80 Vincas. I had both MG and Schultz seed starting mix left from previous year. Side by side comparison between had the Schultz the clear winner for size and vigor. Conditions were exactly the same. Both had comparable germination rates.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Filled with wood chips I was really disappointed that the seed starting mix has so many big chunks of wood in it. That defeats the purpose of a seed starting soil.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Soil Quality A good friend of mine works for Miracle-Gro so I purchased this product in support of his family and sowed a bunch of seeds yesterday. The texture of this product is too course for my liking, too many chunks of wood, etc. It appears that this is just their potting soil rebranded. I guess the proof will be in the seedling since I also used the old brand. I use other Miracle-Gro products with no complaints and recommend them to others. However, if there is not a difference in seedling quality, I will have to go back to my old starting mix.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Miracle grow potting soil. I have used your potting soil for years. This is the first year that I have no success with the soil. I planted at least 25 plants and all but two died. Did everything the same and no success. Lost quite a bit of money. Did something change or does the soil go bad ?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Mold I’ve used Miracle-Gro many times and I’ve never had an issue with mold before this year. The seeds germinated but then mold started growing on some of the plants and soil. I water everyday and their getting a decent amount of sunlight. My concern is, even the pots that don’t show mold; the plants are wilting and dying. Did something change in your mixture?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Why is this fragrant? So i brought two bags of this because its the only seed starting mix they sold at my local tractor supply. After i opened the bag i got a big whiff of a pleasant fragrance. Why does this stuff smell like a perfume? For some reason the consistency just didnt feel "right" to me. I only used this to transplant so far but tonight i will be starting new seeds and i'll update you all on how they do.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Quality....Not a "MIRACLE" The material does not get wet or retain water. When adding water seeds just seem to float to the top with the product particles. This product needs a complete reformulation. Don't waste your time or money on this. It is far from a "Miracle".

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mushroom madness If your looking to grow mushrooms this stuff is great. Last year i bought a bag and a crop of mushrooms popped up. The pepper seeds i planted in this stuff didnt. This year i just bought another bag of this stuff thinking i just got a bad batch last time. Same results this time. Lots of mushrooms, no pepper plants. I did start 40 plants in other soil and all are doing great. So to grow mushrooms, put soil in pot and water. To grow crops, use anything other than this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible product This is by far the worst miracle grow product I've ever used! It takes so much water to even moisten the dirt it's ridiculous. My seeds took 3x longer to start then they ever have before and last year I used dirt feom the dollar store. I would love my money back as well as my time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible product I used this potting mix to start seeds in March. A lot of plants didn’t even show after 2-3 weeks so I replanted and the same thing happened on most seeds. I did have a handful of tomatoes and cherry pepper plants appear, but they all died within about two weeks. The plants stopped growing, turned yellow and started to shrivel up and die. Horrible product! Last year I had over 100 tomatoe and pepper plants for my garden, family and friends. I didn’t get one plant due to this product! All of this is time consuming but love to watch the plants grow and once transplanted in the garden you take pride knowing you started them by seed. Not this year! Now I have to go buy all my plants which will be expensive! Horrible product!!! Don’t use!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Infested With Ants, Lost My Seedlings DO NOT BUY THIS UNLESS YOU PLAN ON POURING BOILING WATER OVER IT, OR BAKING YOUR SOIL FIRST. I used this, indoors with our grow light to start all our seedlings this year. Started noticing a problem with small black ants not long after. Finally discovered the source was in one of my seedling pots. There was an ENTIRE colony of ants living in my 5” pot that I filled with this soil. We had to toss all our seedlings and we’re now 4-5 weeks behind in our growing season because this soil was full of ant larva/eggs. It all went in the compost, but I regret not saving t and sending it back as proof. I will be filing an official complaint with Miracle Gro and hope they take my complaint seriously

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too many small sticks and rocks I've had the same experience that I see somebody else wrote on here. This contains too many pieces of sticks and small rocks for a good seed starter. I'll stick with Jiffy Mix. This issue was even worse for me with MiracleGro Humus & Manure which I'll rate on its own.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not like it used to be I have used Miracle Grow Seed Starting Mix for many years. This year the mix seems to have less vermicullite/perlite than before and does not wet well. Some bags are worse than others. This leads to poor results with my seedlings.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Seed Starter Mix I bought a couple of bags of seed-starter mix. If I would have wanted mulch I would have bought that instead. I shouldn't have to pick sticks and mulch out of my soil. Very disappointing!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst soil ever I bought this soil the other day and used it for several seed starts. What a huge angry waste of money. I wasted seeds I can not get back on this crap. It will not hold a drop of water. Seeds need water to germinate and this crap won't hold a drop. Everything was ruined. Throwing it all out. Terrible. I watered soil over and over and not a drop absorbed my seeds are all messed up. Thanks miracle grow.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hydrophobic soil I used the miracle grow seed starting mix for years. Starting this spring every bag I use seems to be "hydrophobic". You literally can't get water into the soil. When I water my flats the water pools and runs off with half my soil in seeds. It ends up being a huge waste of money as I'm losing expensive seeds. Sounds like others are having this issue as well.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible, completely hydrophobic I bought a fresh bag today, and this is my last straw with miracle grow products. I planted 100 seeds in seed pods, took about an hour, went to water them and it’s a completely hydrophobic mess. Now I have to scoop out the top layer and just hope that I get the seeds. I can’t express how frustrating this is, because it’s not only wasting the money I spent on the bag but is also potentially wasting my time and the seeds involved. Never buying miracle gro again. Absolutely awful. They desperately need to reformulate this, it’s basically just a bag of peat moss.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY. 0 OUT OF 60 SEEDS GERMINATED Horrible product. I'm not sure what was in this, but it prevented any seeds from germinating. I bought a couple of bags when I ran out of the higher quality mix I had been using and didn't want to wait for more to ship. Big mistake. I planted ~60 seeds in this mix, peppers, tomatoes and marigolds, and at the same time I used the rest of what I had to plant more of the same. They were all kept at the ideal temperature for germination, kept moist, etc. And while I had 90% germination on the cells I seeded with my old mix, I had 0% germination with this mix. Not one seed. I lost money and time and wasted seeds. I will never buy anything from miracle grow again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from This is all Peat Moss I have been using this for years. This year the mix will not get wet. The water pools on top and will not soak in. There are lots of little sticks in it and it seams to be all peat moss.
