Miracle-Gro® Expand 'n Gro® Concentrated Planting Mix is a great substitute for potting mix or garden soil as it can be used in-ground or in containers. The compressed coir with plant food expands up to 3X when water is added and feeds plants for up to 6 months. It holds up to 50% more water than basic potting soil and creates up to 90% more air giving your plant's roots all the room they need to thrive.

Easy to use
This was my first time using this product. It orked great and very easy. So far, the plants have responded to the product and seem to be doing great. I look forward to seeing how they continue to thrive.

Great if you have trouble handling heavy bags
This product works as advertised. where i think it's strongest asset would be with anyone who has issues carrying heavy bags of soil. This bag weighs approximately 5lbs and once water is added appears to have the usefulness of a 30lb bag. From what i can see in the approximately 30 days i have used the product, it works as well as regular potting soil and has good water retention. In my situation i will stick with the regular Miracle Gro potting soil as it is just easier to judge the amount needed for the pot.

Easy to use for healthy plants
Product has helped my wild flowers grow. Expand n Grow is fairly easy to use and keeps pots lighter than traditional soil. I’m excited to continue using this product as I repot plants of a wide variety.

Very useful product
Wondering why almost all reviews are from Ohio? I live in N. GA, and I’ve seen this product in my local Home Depot but never purchased when available. Having remembered seeing it, I looked into where I could get some and the reviews associated with it. It’s much more affordable through the MG website than anywhere else, so I purchased it here with no expectations. Here’s my feedback: I loved how light the bags were. And they arrived sooner than expected. I immediately got to work repotting some plants that urgently needed attention— gardenia, Jasmine, curcuma ginger, and others. I find that mixing this with the MG potting soil was much more effective at maintaining the health and thriving conditions of my plants. Just this potting mix alone causes a lot of algae to grow on the top layer due to it’s abilities to retain so much water. Not a terrible issue. Not a lot of air circulates through this soil when used in large pots, hence the reason mixing with other mediums would be beneficial. I’ve not noticed any notable improvements in the vigor or health of my plants at all. But having potted about 6-7 8” pots, 2 three gallon pots, 6 one gallon pots, and a couple rectangular planters with only 2 bags (in addition to small starter pots for about 25 seedlings, this was far easier to use than regular bagged soils. I’m looking to purchase a couple more bags to experiment in other areas of the garden. Many other reviewers mentioned it was dusty. I would expect nothing less. It’s dry dirt, so....What I’m liking, though, is using this soil for seed-starting. Especially delicate seeds such as basil. I couldn’t get my basil seeds to germinate in anything else. Now I’ve got several healthy basil plants growing on my kitchen counter, ready to enjoy! Will definitely be using this product for germinations moving forward. Despite not seeing any obvious improvements in health/vigor of existing plants, I still feel it’s a useful, quality product to have on hand for my gardening needs and would highly recommend.

Expanding soil
I got the new expand and gro soil from miracle gro this weekend and was eager to see what it was all about. The instructions were easy to follow and the soil expanded like the bag claimed it would. However the additional chore of mixing the soil and water put me off as I prefer to just fill my pots, put the plants in and watch them grow. If you are looking for something lightweight and easy to handle though this product might be right for you.

High quality. Consistent mix. Retains moisture very well
My wife and I have moved a few plants into larger pots and utilized the new Expand 'n Gro Mix and it performed as advertised. One week later the plants are doing well. I really like the water retention property.

Meh ... I'm not thrilled
I purchased this soil as I have back issues and the lighter bag was appealing. I was disappointed that there were no practical instructions other than "fill pot 1/3 and add water - mix and wait to expand" essentially. So,I turned to Chat GPT for help.
Per that advice, I've added 1.5 bags to each 10 gal grow bag and added 1.5 gallons water gradually - mixing well each time water added. This expanded the soil to fill about 1/2 of each grow bag. It's been over an hour now and still no further expansion. I've fluffed up again, and still no additional expansion. The soil still feels wet - so I'll leave it overnight and I hope to wake up to see fully expanded soil. Per Chat GPT the 1.5 bags should fill the grow bags leaving about 2" at the top.
So - 3 stars for the light-weight nature of the soil and good name of Miracle Gro. Minus the 2 stars for lack of helpful directions and the fact it's not performing as expected.

Dusty, a lot of work
This product is very dusty when you open up the bag. It's alot of work to add water and stir. Seems to hold up well in the pot.

Disappointed
Used it in a large pot. Followed directions. Stirring was annoying. Added more water as directed in increments. Some expansion but ended up as a muddy mess. Requested and received refund from retailer. Not worth the $ or the hype
