Makes the most of lemon rinds with this fun seed-starting project.
Step 1: Cut off the top third of a thin-skinned lemon, like the Meyer variety. Remove the juice and all of the pulp, carefully scraping down to the white pith. (Save it to make a quick lemon shake-up using the recipe below.)
Step 2: Poke a drainage hole into the bottom of the lemon and then fill the empty rind with a high quality seed-starting mix, like Miracle-Gro® Seed Starting Potting Mix.
Step 3: Plant 1 to 3 seeds, or as directed on your seed packet.
Step 4: Add a good amount of water, but pour slowly and evenly so you don't dislodge the seeds. Place the planter in a window sill or under a grow light until the seeds sprout.
Step 5: A few weeks after they sprout, transplant the entire thing into a garden or container. The plant will grow, and the lemon rind will naturally break down in the soil.
So, when life gives you lemons...make a lemon rind seed starter!
