HOW TO GROW AND CARE FOR NORFOLK PINES

Learn how this graceful, tropical indoor tree can thrive in your home

When you want to green up your space with houseplants, don’t overlook the Norfolk Pine. While this tropical evergreen tree grows up to 200 feet tall on Norfolk Island in the South Pacific, it usually comes in under 6 feet, with a straight trunk and elegant, lacy branches of delicate needles. You can even drape garland around it each December for your very own living Christmas tree. Learn everything you need to know about caring for a Norfolk Pine.

Norfolk Pines love the light

The first step to keeping a Norfolk Pine happy is making sure it’s in its happy place—near a light. Bright, indirect sunlight is the bullseye. That means finding a western or southern facing window. Too much direct light will give it sunburn.

Consistent hydration keeps Norfolk Pines happy

Norfolk Pines like just enough water, but, of course, not too much. Pour water in circles around the trunk so the soil is thoroughly wet and hydration reaches the roots. Be sure to dump any water that has collected in the pan or saucer under your pot. Check soil regularly to make sure it stays consistently moist. If the top inch of soil feels dry, it’s time to water.

Humidity makes a Norfolk Pine feel at home

Coming from the South Pacific, Norfolk Pines appreciate a good amount of humidity in the air. If your home is on the dryer side, either use a humidity tray, mist the tree regularly, or set a small humidifier close by. Norfolk Pines thrive in temperatures between 60-70 degrees F, so keep it inside during the winter and protect it from cold or draft spots in your home.

Feed your Norfolk Pine Miracle-Gro® Spikes or Indoor Plant Food

During spring and summer, your Norfolk Pine’s growing seasons, be sure to feed it regularly to support its growth. Miracle-Gro® Indoor Plant Food Spikes and Miracle-Gro® Indoor Plant Food are easy ways to make sure your tree continuously gets the nutrients it needs. During winter and fall you can feed less often. Check the package for the recommended amount.

Make sure your Norfolk Pine has a comfy home inside your home

If it isn’t in one already, move your Norfolk Pine into a pot that drains well, to prevent it from getting water-logged. You’ll want a high-quality soil like Miracle-Gro® Indoor Potting Mix, which is enriched with organic matter and gives your Norfolk Pine the nutrients it needs for optimal growth.

Keep your Norfolk Pine in good shape

Regular pruning will keep you and your Norfolk Pine perky. Lower branches may brown and lose needles as your plant grows. Snip them off at the trunk. Be sure to only trim around the base of the plant, not the top, because this evergreen doesn’t branch like other plants. A little pruning will encourage it to grow fuller and bushier, just don’t remove too much foliage at one time.

Watch out for pests

Check in on your Norfolk Pine regularly. Inspect the branches and needles for spider mites, scale, and other common indoor plant pests. If you spot any, treat them right away with neem oil or insecticidal soap.

With the right care and feeding, a Norfolk Pine may be the perfect addition to your family, bringing a bit of nature, some height, and a graceful flourish of green to your space.
